Coronavirus: Nigerian professional footballer infected in Italy

A player in the Italian third division – Serie C – has tested positive for coronavirus. He is believed to be the first case of a footballer in Europe to be infected with the coronavirus. BBC in a live update identified the player as Paul Akpan Udoh, who is an Italian-Nigerian footballer. Udon is a 22-year-old player, who plays for Pianese in Serie C. He was said to be diagnosed on Thursday and has been quarantined. A statement from the Tuscany region read, “Two new suspected positive cases of Coronavirus in Tuscany. Both are awaiting confirmation by the Higher Institute of Health. “One is a 22-year-old man in the Siena province, a Pianese player, who last Saturday had symptoms in a hotel in Alessandria, where he was training with the team ahead of Sunday’s game (at Juventus U-23s). “He did not play the game that morning as he had a high fever. The mother of the slain Assistant Captain of Remo Stars Football Club, Tiamiyu Kazeem, has said operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad had attempted to arrest her son two weeks before his death on Saturday. The mother stated this on Tuesday morning when the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, paid a condolence visit to the family of the deceased. The country's health ministry says the affected person is a 'foreigner' who is hospitalised and in isolation . Egypt has confirmed its first case of a deadly coronavirus that emerged in central China at the end of last year and has since spread to more than two dozen countries around the world. Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Mugahed said in a statement on Friday that the affected person was a "foreigner" who did not show any serious symptoms. Officials were able to confirm the case through a follow-up programme implemented by the government for travellers arriving from countries where the virus has spread. The ministry statement said the person was hospitalised and in isolation. It did not specify the person's nationality or their point of entry. The development made Egypt the first country in the African continent to report a confirmed case, and the second in the Middle East region, after the United Arab Emirates late last month diagnosed its fi

It was learnt that fire fighters, when alerted, swung into action and succeeded in puting out the fire, stopping it from consuming the entire building. Contacted, the spokesperson to Obasanjo, Kehinde Akinyemi, said he would get back to our correspondent. He is yet to do so as at the time this report is being filed. A building belonging to former President Olusegun Obasanjo was said to have caught fire on Wednesday evening. The fire, it was learnt, started around 9pm at the backside of the house, located at Ita Eko, opposite African Grammar School, Abeokuta the Ogun State capital. Many slump as fire guts popular Lagos plank market

About 15 shop owners were said to have slumped due to the wildfire that razed Amu Timber, a Lagos popular plank market on Saturday morning. Residents were divided over when the fire started. Some said the fire started around 11pm while others said it was around 12am. The Nation Correspondent counted more than seven burnt houses. Goods worth hundreds of billions were lost to the inferno. The shop owners, some of who live in far places, could not savage any of their goods. No confirmed case of Lassa Fever in Ogun – Commissioner

Ogun State government on Wednesday said that there is no confirmed case of Lassa Fever in the State. The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) erroneously listed Ogun as one of the affected states. But reacting, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, in a release, said there is no case of confirmed Lassa Fever in Ogun, adding that government had however put its health officials on red alert in the event of a suspected case. Coker therefore allays the fear of residents of the State, advising them to avoid contact with rodents and ensure personal as well as environmental hygiene. Describing Lassa Fever as an endemic acute viral hemorrhage illness that is transmitted from rodents to human, and human to human, the Commissioner advised health workers across the state to maintain a high index of suspicions for Lassa and treat all cases of fever symptoms with caution. She added that all suspected cases of Lassa Fever should be reported to the Local Government Area
